From the Mont Sainte-Victoire to the Alpine peaks, via Salzburg, opera festivals are taking spectators up to musical summits.
Aix-en-provence Among the productions marking the 70th anniversary of the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence is Prokofiev’s The Fiery Angel, a rare, complex work first performed in 1954 at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. The Orchestre de Paris is conducted by Kazushi Ono, who is well acquainted with this dark opera about mystery, love and alchemy, featuring angels in human form, knights and sorcerers. It’s the first production in France of Polish director Mariusz Trelinski, known for his cinematic influences.
Salzbourg This summer sees the 40th staging of The Magic Flute at the Salzburg Festival in a production by young American director Lydia Steier. It includes the creation of a narrative role, played by Bruno Ganz, to perform Mozart’s Singspiel. An opportunity to hear the Vienna Philharmonic and baritone Matthias Goerne, playing Sarastro, enemy of the sinister Queen of the Night, sung by the Russian soprano Albina Shagimuratova.
Verbier The Verbier Festival’s new music director, Valery Gergiev, conducts this concert version of Francesco Cilea’s opera Adriana Lecouvreur, first performed in 1902 with the famous Caruso. Tatiana Serjan sings the title role, and Ekaterina Semenchuk her rival, the Princess of Bouillon.
