Îles de France

In France, according to Beaumarchais, “everything ends with songs.” All over the world, the magic of Paris is celebrated onstage and in song by performers whose hearts and souls belong to the French capitala city that resonates within all their notes, whether they were born, trained or discovered there.

Iranian video artist Shirin Neshat is directing Aida in Salzburg.

At the Salzburg Festival, Parisians have the last word.Sandrine Piau has her life saved by Handel’s hero Ariodante, while Marianne Crebassa owes hers to the clemency of Titus (Mozart). These young French voices resonate with the Egyptologist Auguste Mariette, who in 1871 created a plot and the costumes for Verdi’s majestic Aida. In her first production, the Iranian video artist Shirin Neshat promises to stun listeners with the singing of the mysterious foreigner, Aida.

If you’re a piano groupie, chances are you’ll be camping out in the wonderful gardens at Château de Florans or on the dreamy slopes of Verbier to hear the world’s top pianists perform in the open air. In Provence, Claire Désert, Emmanuel Strosser and six friends will be performing piano pieces for 8, 12, 14 and 16 hands in a festival that features Mozart and Beethoven nights. In the Swiss Alps, Mikhail Pletnev, with his fertile imagination, and the mesmerizing Yuja Wang, with her 4.9 million YouTube views, are both gracing the program.

Although he was one of the creators of the “grand opera” genre that flourished in 19th-century France, Meyerbeer’s works are sadly rarely performed in Paris. The opera festival in Martina Franca, the superb Baroque capital of Puglia, founded in the 14th century by Philip of Anjou, is a tireless reviver of operas, from Monteverdi to Verdi. Margherita d’Anjou, his first Italian opera to be adapted for the French stage, appears here in a powerful new production.
