Environmental research is crucial for forecasting air quality and climate change. Passenger aircraft can collect regular atmospheric measurements around the world and at altitudes where no other means of observation can provide sufficiently clear pictures. That is why Air France, in partnership with the CNRS (French National Center for Scientific Research), is participating in the European project IAGOS (In-service Aircraft for a Global Observing System), by installing atmospheric measurement sensors on two of its aircraft, an A340 (since 2013) and an A330 (since April 2017). The data gathered is made available to scientists worldwide.
