This month, Lille’s Palais des Beaux-Arts is embarking on a gourmet dialogue with the multifaceted starred chef Alain Passard, an aesthete with an inexhaustible curiosity.

Boiling mad pressure cookers steaming away in the atrium (Pilar Albarracín), a fluorescent sunset illuminating the gallery of Impressionist paintings (Pierre Ardouvin), a little pastry cook paying a visit to the modern art room (Chaïm Soutine): there’s something funny going on in Lille’s Palais des Beaux-Arts. Look no further, just take a whiff. The trouble-maker here is Alain Passard, the chef at Arpège, one of the world’s most creative and prestigious restaurants. The museum has given him carte blanche for three months as part of its Open Museum program. Following Air group, the Donald character by the InterDuck collective and the comics creator Zep, this French chef takes his turn, adding his own blend of flavors to the rooms. The goal? To “spice up” the collections a bit by placing modern and contemporary works next to the museum’s historic masterpieces in order to shed new light on them. Working with curator Valentine Meyer, Passard has devised elements full of wit and flavor that are interspersed between them, like a red neon by Claude Lévêque announcing, “Je saigne” (I’m bleeding), opposite a Descent from the Cross by Rubens, and Louis de Funès’s hilarious “dance of the gravy boats” projected in the ceramics gallery. Museum-goers can see the colorful compositions and bronze sculptures that the chef crafts when he’s not behind the stove or in his gardens. With this exhibition by Passard, whose goal has always been to “awaken the palate,” the museum is really whetting appetites.
