The LUX* South Ari Atoll in the Maldives has four kilometers of beaches.
What drew you to the hotel industry?
As far back as I can recall, I always wanted to be a chef. My teachers persuaded me to study management, but the world of cuisine, especially French and Asian, still continued to fascinate me. I somehow manage to combine the two in my profession.
What is special about LUX* Resorts & Hotels?
We offer each customer a different service, so as to cater to their specific wishes and needs. We see our mission as being to help our holidaymakers enjoy life, especially during their vacations, when every minute counts. We believe in unique, irreplaceable, personalized customer care.
Which places best represent the values shared by the group’s hotels?
Paris, a wonderful city where you can walk absolutely everywhere. Then there’s its art and culture, light, and the fabulous architecture. There’s London, where I always go back to the Royal Opera House. And Gaudí’s architecture and the Dalí museum in Figueras spring to mind. On a spiritual level, it’s Asia that attracts me: trekking in Nepal, the courtesy and gracefulness of the Japanese, and their Zen design. The ethnic minorities in Sichuan and Yunnan in southwest China and the truly stunning landscapes. Base Camp at Everest, and Tibetan peace and harmony.
What do you always take with you?
My Leica, to take black-and-white photographs. And above all, my prayer book and beads, to practice Mahayana Buddhism every morning and evening.
What’s the first thing you do when you arrive in a new place?
I stroll around in the early morning to get a feel for the place. I then go and take photos.
A trip back in time?
I’d probably travel back a thousand years, to China or Japan. We have much to learn from the Eastern philosophers, on an ethical level and in terms of openness to and respect for others. The East has always been ahead of the West.
