Young pianist Joey Alexander, on the program at the Monterey Jazz Festival.

There’s a kind of magic surrounding prodigiesa belief in miracles, a tour de force by an ephemeral genius. But these talented young musicians refuse the clichés and work the necessary hours on end, so as to achieve the note of perfection.

Monterey He’s only 13, but Balinese pianist Joey Alexander has all the makings of a genius: a keen sense of rhythm, incredible mastery of harmony and, above all, some amazing improv chops. With greats like Miles, Monk and Coltrane always in mind, he introduces his own innovative style and technique to mainstream jazz, injecting brighter, more sparkling colors with stunning maturity. A performance not to be missed.

Detroit Jake Bugg seemed to come from out of nowhere on the English music scene when he released his debut album at 18. Three years later, he took a gamble and gravitated toward electronic music, hip-hop and R’n’B. After playing the summer festival circuit in France, Bugg crossed the Atlantic to launch a major US tour.

Besançon The Besançon Music Festival, France’s oldest classical music festival, has always been a hub for artistic encounters of all kinds. This year’s festival is no exception: Portuguese artist Duarte performs traditional fado accompanied by two guitars. Given Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity status by UNESCO, fado expresses a journey to the heart of the Portuguese soul, and Duarte is a sheer marvel to watch.
